Why Would You Require a Tooth Extraction?
There are many reasons why you may require a tooth extraction, including the following:
- Extensive Decay or Trauma: Deep decay or damage, left untreated, can result in severe pain, infection, and serious complications. If a tooth is damaged beyond repair, extracting it may be the only viable option to safeguard your oral health.
- Fractured Tooth: A tooth crack or fracture may result from grinding your teeth or biting down on a hard candy or object. If the fracture extends vertically below the gum line, extracting it is often the only option to alleviate your discomfort.
- Advanced Periodontal Disease: If not treated and managed, periodontal disease can damage the bone and tissues that keep the teeth in place, resulting in loose teeth. If a tooth loses its support, we may need to extract it to prevent further oral health complications.
- Orthodontic Treatment: Orthodontic treatment sometimes requires selective tooth extractions. This helps create the space needed for the remaining teeth to move into alignment.
Wisdom Teeth Extractions
The wisdom teeth, or third molars, are the last permanent teeth to come in, usually in the late teens or early twenties. They are notorious for causing problems, including being impacted or trapped in the jawbone. Impacted teeth can cause serious problems, including cysts or infections that can damage the neighboring teeth.
Wisdom teeth sometimes come in at incorrect angles, pushing your teeth out of alignment. Insufficient room in your mouth for your wisdom teeth can lead to alignment concerns or crowding, often requiring orthodontic treatment.
At Ivey Dental, we recommend the removal of problematic wisdom teeth to safeguard your oral health. We may also recommend extracting wisdom teeth that have the potential to cause problems.
What Can You Expect?
We will start by numbing the area with a local anesthetic and may recommend oral or IV sedation, if needed, to help you relax during treatment. A simple tooth extraction involves gently loosening and removing a tooth that's visible above the gum line and is easily accessible. A surgical extraction, on the other hand, is a more involved procedure to remove impacted or problematic teeth.
Depending on the location of your extracted tooth, we may recommend a procedure known as ridge preservation. It involves placing a bone graft right after extracting a tooth to stabilize the bone and preserve the ridge contours, which is especially important if you are considering future restoration, such as dental implants.
