Here are some of the most common dental emergencies and things you can do to stabilize your condition before your emergency appointment: 

• Knocked-Out Permanent Teeth: Carefully pick up the tooth by the crown without touching its root, rinse it, and gently return it to its socket. If that is not possible, keep the tooth moist in a cup of milk or saliva. This is a time-sensitive emergency, so make sure to contact our office as soon as possible.
• Severe Tooth Pain: Rinse with warm salt water and gently floss around the painful area to dislodge any food caught between two teeth that may be causing your discomfort. Use over-the-counter pain relief medication and apply cold compresses to reduce pain or swelling. Make sure never to put aspirin directly on your teeth or gums.
• Chipped or Broken Teeth: Place any pieces of the tooth you can find in some milk or saliva. Rinse your mouth with warm water and place cold compresses to ease any swelling. If the tooth is painful, over-the-counter pain relief medication can help.
• Bleeding: Apply gentle pressure using a piece of gauze or a clean cloth. If you have severe bleeding that won't stop, head to the nearest hospital emergency room for immediate care. Uncontrollable bleeding is a serious emergency requiring prompt treatment.
• Infection or Abscess: Facial swelling or a pimple-like bump on the gums may indicate an infection requiring prompt treatment. Left untreated, harmful oral bacteria from the infection can spread to the adjacent teeth and other parts of the body, leading to serious complications. Call us for immediate assistance.
